ultimate doowop show!

october 8, 2005 - state theater

featuring: the tune weavers, the earls, the toys, the dell vikings, the bobbettes, the soul stirrers, gene chandler, and the drifters.

THE TUNE WEAVERS: played "happy happy birthday baby."

THE TOYS: played "a lover's concertio," plus did a really nice girls group medley.

THE EARLS: i was pumped to see, but ultimately disappointed in. the singer thinks he is some kind of comedian, but he is totally not funny. they did "remember then," but not "lookin for my baby."

THE DELL VIKINGS: another one i was pumped for and slightly disappointed with. first of all, it was only one of the original guys left, who now plays with two of his sons that looked/acted like milli vanilli. at least they played both "whispering bells" and "come go with me," and both sounded pretty good.

THE BOBBETTES: sang "mr. lee" and even though that was really their only hit, they are still really good and entertaining and they were one of the best parts of the nite.

SOUL STIRRERS: this was a tribute to sam cooke. i think they were his backup singers maybe? anyway they sounded really good, but picked crappy songs of his to perform.

GENE CHANDLER: fun dude. when he did "duke of earl" he wore this cape and had this cane and crept around the stage, but really he looked more like an old magician. he also did "groovy situation" and covered "i only have eyes for you."

THE DRIFTERS: way excellent still. one of the guys in the band is almost 90, which made it even more incredible that he was singing and dancing (sorta?) along. it was supposed to be one of his last shows, so i feel lucky that we got to see it when we did. they did all the hits, and started off with my favorite one -- "there goes my baby," "this magic moment," "up on the roof," "save the last dance for me," "under the boardwalk."
